Pirate Themed Day!

Ahoy Matey!!  What a great day we are going to have!!
I just love these themed days...maybe it's a Friday Fun Day, a class reward day, or one of those days just before vacation when giggles, jiggles and "help I can't pay attention" kick in!
This themed day helps keeps students engaged AND learning while having so much fun.

Visit the library and pick up some of these delightful pirate stories to read throughout the day.
Your students will LOVE them.

And check out these adorable pirate crafts.
Perfect for a bulletin board or hallway.

No day is complete unless we learn the facts and this pack has a 10 page mini book about pirates as well as an informational page.

Your class can use these organizers to gather actual facts or use their imagination after reading about pirates.

And look at this word much fun.  Choose one or use them all!

Mathematics includes an addition and subtraction game.  Add differentiation by using 1,2,3 dice or increasing the number for subtraction.  Finally there is a data collection page.

Following all of these activities students should be ready to write.
Create a class book so all student entries can be read.
What a way to showcase student efforts!!

An to top it off there are colorful vocabulary cards with pictures, a snack idea and a pattern for a pirate hat!

And check  Pinterest for other fun filled ideas!

September Writing with Page Toppers

I love writing activities that can also be used to decorate a bulletin board, locker or hallway!
This is just the thing.

September brings you Johnny Appleseed and a Scarecrow.
Perfect for the month of September.

Johnny Appleseed includes a fill in the blank story about John Chapman, 2 graphic organizers, a letter to Johnny and make connections with Appleseed.

Scarecrows includes...If I were, What a scarecrow might hear, see and smell, as well as a scarecrow is, has, can...

Each of the activities leads to a final writing page with the topper as shown first and a class book for students to read and share their creative thoughts.

Let's Write...September...ELA CCSS

I love this writing bundle.  Each month the packet is filled with writing practice and experiences to enhance your classroom writing curriculum.  If you are looking to create a program that is "WRITE ON" this year this bundle is for you!

Each month the packet will include a cover for a student workbook and a cover for a student journal.
I like to keep the two separate so the class can have a place to gather ideas, write, and edit as well as a place where they can place their "showpiece" writing effort for all to see.

I love teaching grammar as I teach writing so the class can actually experience using the skill in real life.  This lesson focuses on punctuation so as the students are writing they will be paying close attention to the punctuation they are using and if it is accurate.

Each month there will be 4 lessons complete with a literature suggestion and lesson plans on suggestions for working with your class.
Here are the four topics and literature suggestions for September.
Summer Vacation
Back to School
Johnny Appleseed

After practicing the grammar and reading the suggested literature students will use one of the differentiated graphic organizers to gather their ideas for writing.  I love reading the literature first because it gets the "creative juices" flowing.  For your lowest writers even pictures are appropriate.

Next the class will complete what we call a FIRST DRAFT using the ideas they collected.  With my lowest writers we usually work in a small group and use the organizer they collected their ideas on.  The remaining writers move to these.
For editing I like to have students reread and look for mistakes.  Most cannot do this initially especially if they came from a class that wrote and never made corrections.
RARELY does my class write and NOT make corrections.  I like them to begin to visualize accurate writing.  Most often I like to take time to edit with the student.

Now for the final draft.  Many, many students find it difficult to rewrite their corrected writing piece.  With practice they will become experts.
At the end of September they will have a collection of four writing pieces.
You can save these or send them home.
I like to copy one piece each month and save it so the students can see the progress they made.
There is also a class book cover to make put a copy of each students writing.
Children love reading each others stories.

September Poetry

The September poetry set includes four poems with fall themes.
I use the set shown here to sent home to parents.
This packet is perfect for a poem a week.
There is also a "cootie catcher" to use for comprehension.

Each poem has a page in color for posting, and activity page for the student, a bookmark which I run on heavy paper, and cards for printing on heavy paper and cutting out.  I then put these and the page with the poem on it in an area where students can put the poem in order.  It is wonderful for word recognition and a small group activity if you wish.
Starting in October each student has their own cut and paste page with sentences.
